Staying in Bali for Months? Choose a Visa That Fits Your Plans

Planning months in Bali? Your activities—not your villa lease—determine the Indonesian visa to investigate. Compare remote work, local jobs and family stays.

Dreaming of spending several months in Bali? A villa in Canggu, a quieter base in Sanur or a room in Ubud can look like the start of a new life. But the key decision comes before paying a long rental deposit: what will you actually do here, and which Indonesian visa or stay permission could lawfully cover that activity?

Three people with the same six-month rental need different answers. An employee working online for an overseas company may investigate a qualifying remote-worker route. Someone taking clients or a job in Indonesia must assess the applicable local employment and immigration permission instead. A visitor who simply wants a long holiday needs to compare permitted visitor-stay lengths and extension conditions. None becomes eligible merely by renting a villa or joining a coworking space.

Bali does not issue its own residence visas. National Indonesian immigration rules apply in Canggu, Ubud and Sanur alike. The choices below help you select the right national guide and avoid paying for a property or service built around the wrong assumption.

Decide what you will actually do during your stay

You work remotely as an employee of a company outside IndonesiaCheck whether E33G matches your real employment agreement, income and activity in the Indonesia E33G remote-worker guide.
You will work for an Indonesian company or provide paid services to local clientsStart with the Indonesia work and long-stay guide. Your employer and the applicable labour/immigration requirements matter; E33G is not an unrestricted Indonesian work pass.
You are staying 45–180 days as a visitor rather than workingCompare visa-exempt entry, B1, C1 and D1 in Which Visa Do You Need to Visit Indonesia?. Passport eligibility, permitted days per entry and extension rules differ.
You are joining a spouse or family memberInvestigate the real family/sponsor status through the national long-stay overview and the official e-Visa portal. Marriage does not automatically grant employment permission.
You already hold an ITAS and are considering permanent stayRead Moving from Temporary to Permanent Stay in Indonesia. An ITAS extension is not the same as applying for ITAP.
You are an investor or planning retirementFind the current relevant visa index in the official e-Visa system and clarify the applicable funding, investment, activity and residence requirements before committing money.

Example — Canggu remote employee: Your salary comes from a company abroad, and you plan to work online for six months. That makes E33G worth investigating, not automatically yours. A person with several freelance clients but no qualifying overseas employment agreement needs an individual category decision; paying an agent or renting a coworking desk cannot create eligibility.

Example — Ubud consultant: A foreign customer paying into an overseas bank account does not necessarily make the work “overseas employment” if you plan to serve Indonesian clients or operate locally. Establish the actual permitted activity with Immigration and the relevant employer/business authority before you start.

Example — family or established resident: A foreign spouse may have a family residence option, but the visa, permission to stay and right to work are separate. Someone already holding an ITAS should check its expiry, sponsor and visa index before discussing a possible ITAP application; a two-year marriage or years of residence does not alone guarantee it.

Loved your holiday and want to stay? Check your existing permission first

A visitor who likes Bali may be tempted to extend a villa lease first and sort out the permission later. That reverses the safe order. Check your actual visa index and admitted last day, then find out whether your category allows an extension or a different lawful application before expiry.

For example, the national Indonesia visit-visa guide distinguishes a nonextendable visa exemption from a B1 arrival visa with a possible extension and a prearranged C1 visit route. Some extension processes require attendance at an Immigration office for photographs and an interview, even after online submission. A payment confirmation is not an approved extension. Plan your accommodation and any trip to Lombok around the permission actually issued.

An agent's “Bali digital nomad visa” label, a property lease or a flight booking is not an official visa index. Start with evisa.imigrasi.go.id and the competent Ngurah Rai Immigration service when you need category-specific confirmation.

The Bali decisions to settle before committing to a home

A Bali base has practical costs beyond the visa and monthly rent. Someone working from a Canggu villa may need dependable internet and transport to regular errands; a family choosing Sanur might care more about healthcare, everyday shops and school-related travel. These are examples of different priorities, not guarantees about every address. Decide what a normal week would look like before agreeing to a long contract.

A long villa deposit can become a real problem if your permitted stay ends earlier than the lease. Before paying months of rent, compare the actual contract's cancellation and refund terms with the period of residence you are legally authorised to have. Ask who handles maintenance and whether you can reach your everyday destinations without repeated paid transfers. The Bali renting guide explains landlord authority, deposits and property checks; the Bali car-free area guide helps you test a practical address.

For longer stays, also plan health cover, local transport and a workable address and contact method for Immigration paperwork. A bank balance, coworking membership or company registration is not itself evidence that your personal activity is lawful. Likewise, an immigration stay category does not automatically decide your tax position.

Bali-specific tourist levy: Love Bali is a provincial foreign-tourist payment, not a national residence or work permit. Certain documented resident/family categories may be exempt, and some other categories follow an application process. Our Bali entry and Love Bali levy guide explains how to verify the payment or exemption. Do not assume every ITAS holder is exempt in every circumstance without checking their actual document.

Two people leaving the same Bali viewing should make different decisions: the overseas employee should take their real contract to the remote-worker eligibility guide; the person offered Indonesian clients should resolve local work permission before accepting payment. Both should postpone a non-refundable lease if their authorised stay or right to work is uncertain. Choose your activity and the matching immigration route first; choose a property and deposit only after that route can support your real plan.
