First decide where you will sleep, then choose transport. Bali has no single rail system connecting DPS airport, Canggu, Ubud, Sanur and Uluwatu. What looks like a short distance on a map may require slow roads, a separate boat or several transfers. For an arrival, pick a verified pickup and a realistic route to the actual accommodation address; for day trips, decide whether a driver is cheaper in time and effort, not just in the advertised fare.
Your route at a glance
| Reader situation | Best first check | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Arriving at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) | Actual arrivals exit and authorised pickup instructions for your booked service | Following an unsolicited driver without confirming vehicle and price |
| Staying in Canggu/Seminyak | Exact lane or villa entrance and peak-time road journey | Assuming a car can enter every small street |
| Staying in Ubud | Number of distant day trips and return journey | Treating an Ubud–southern-coast day as a short local hop |
| Staying in Sanur before an island boat | Confirmed boat company, actual departure pier and luggage terms | Confusing one port or fast boat with every ferry service |
| Crossing Java–Bali overland | ASDP/Ferizy route, terminal and vehicle/passenger check-in requirements | Assuming a ferry booking is the same product as a Sanur fast boat |
1. Get from DPS to the right entrance
The Indonesian civil aviation authority identifies I Gusti Ngurah Rai as airport DPS in southern Bali. Before landing, save the accommodation's exact address, phone number and ideally a map pin that reaches the car-accessible entrance, not just a neighbourhood label.
Compare your hotel's pickup, an airport-authorised taxi and an available app-based service under the pickup rules that apply on your arrival date. Verify the pickup location, vehicle registration or booking identifier, quoted price or metering basis, road tolls and payment method before leaving. Arrivals may have separate collection areas: do not assume an app's map pin is the official curb for all vehicles.
Example: Two villas are advertised as "Canggu", but one sits at the end of a narrow lane. Confirm where the car can stop and whether your host will meet you. A small saving on a taxi is irrelevant if you are dropped far away at night with large bags.
2. Pick one useful base instead of commuting across Bali
List your three essential activities and plot them against the accommodation before you book. If they cluster around Ubud, a cheaper room far to the south can create costly daily returns; if you mainly want Sanur and early boat departures, staying across the island adds transfer risk.
For each proposed road journey, ask a provider for a journey estimate at the actual departure period, then compare: hotel-to-pickup walking; driving and waiting; return availability; and whether a second car will be required. Estimates are not fixed promises, especially in rain or congestion.
Illustrative choice: A traveller visiting Ubud attractions on three days considers a southern beach villa for a slightly lower nightly price. Calculate the extra three round trips plus lost sightseeing hours before calling it a bargain.
3. Driver, taxi or scooter: check the real obligations
A private driver suits multi-stop outings when the agreement specifies pickup, end time, stops, fuel, tolls, parking, waiting and overtime. A taxi or booked car may suit one journey; agree whether a return pickup is included and how to contact the operator if phone data fails.
A scooter is not the automatic low-cost option. Before accepting a rental, establish the rider's valid Indonesian driving entitlement for that vehicle, helmets, registration, rental damage terms and explicit medical/travel-insurance coverage. A rental shop handing over keys proves none of those things. If the conditions or your riding experience are uncertain, book another mode. Do not surrender your original passport to an unverified operator as informal security without understanding safer options.
Keep a written trip plan if the day includes children, mobility needs, medical appointments or flights. Door-to-door reliability may outweigh the lowest price.
4. Do not confuse fast boats with the Java–Bali ferry
A fast boat booked for Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan is an operator-specific passenger journey. Verify that operator's actual departure/arrival pier, check-in deadline, luggage rules, permitted changes and cancellation/refund policy. Do not assume every island boat leaves Sanur or returns to the same place. The sea can prevent sailings; never rely on a same-day tight international flight connection after an exposed boat trip.
The Ketapang–Gilimanuk Java–Bali crossing is a different ferry route and may involve ASDP services. For a crossing on an applicable ASDP itinerary, the official Ferizy booking service shows passenger/vehicle categories, port check-in time and identity/vehicle-document conditions. Ferizy's booking rules do not automatically apply to private Sanur fast boats. ASDP has documented weather-driven open/close operations on the Bali Strait; check a live operational notice rather than trusting an old timetable.
Before any boat journey, check BMKG's marine forecast, the operator and the port authority. A forecast is not a permission to sail; operators and authorities decide actual operations.
Example: A family returns from Nusa Penida in the afternoon and has an evening flight from DPS. If the boat cancels, alternative road transport cannot cross the water. A night on mainland Bali before the flight is often the more resilient plan.
5. One page of checks before you pay
- Write the true door-to-door route, including hotel lane, pickup point, terminal and arrival pier.
- Confirm the operator, travel date, booking reference and ticket validity for each segment.
- Compare the total cost: fares, vehicle, extra passengers, waiting, parking and the return trip.
- Leave time for congestion, rain, luggage and separate ticket connections.
- Save the driver's contact and hotel address offline; keep a licensed alternative.
- On island routes, check weather alerts and the operator's same-day sailing status before departing for the pier.
Before committing to a nonrefundable connection, confirm the exact DPS pickup point, your actual hotel area, whether a licensed driver or permitted rental fits your trip, and the boat operator with both ports. Allow for weather and traffic on the travel date. Indonesian national immigration rules still govern entry to Bali, and a transport booking is not proof of immigration or driving eligibility.
